The AI and digitalisation grants Malaysian SMEs can claim in 2026

Budget 2026 put real money behind SME digitalisation. Most of it goes unclaimed, mostly because the paperwork looks heavier than it is.

Every few months a client tells us they would automate something "if the budget were there". Often it partly is, and they have not looked. Malaysia has several overlapping schemes aimed squarely at small and medium businesses adopting digital tools, and Budget 2026 widened them specifically toward AI.

Here is the shape of what is available, in plain language. Treat every figure below as a starting point for your own check, not as advice. Eligibility, quantums and windows change, and the official portal is always the authority.

1. The MSME Digital Grant (Digital Madani)

The best-known one. It works on a matching basis: the grant covers a share of what you spend on qualifying digital tools, up to a cap in the region of RM5,000, and you pay the rest. It is administered through Bank Simpanan Nasional, and the important catch is that you must buy from a Technology Service Provider on the approved MDEC list. A brilliant vendor who is not on the list will not qualify.

Typical qualifying categories include digital marketing, e-commerce, HR and payroll systems, accounting software, and point-of-sale systems. If you have been putting off replacing a paper-and-spreadsheet process, this is the one aimed at you.

2. The Digital Acceleration Grant

Budget 2026 allocated a further fund, reported at around RM53 million, specifically to push adoption of AI, cybersecurity and related technology among Malaysian businesses. This one is pitched at companies doing something more substantial than buying off-the-shelf software: adopting AI in an operational way, moving to cloud, hardening security.

If you are considering a custom build rather than a subscription, this is the scheme worth reading closely.

3. The extra tax deduction on AI training

Less headline-grabbing and easier to use. Training courses in AI and cybersecurity that are accredited through the recognised national channels can attract an additional 50% tax deduction on the training spend.

This one matters because it changes the arithmetic on upskilling the staff you already have. The most common failure mode we see is not a bad tool. It is a good tool that nobody in the office was trained to use.

4. The wider financing pool

Beyond the individual grants, Budget 2026 committed well over RM1 billion in additional financing and grants routed through development finance institutions toward SME automation and digitalisation. That is a lending pool rather than free money, but the rates and terms are aimed at exactly this kind of spending.

What gets applications rejected

From what we see on the ground, the same handful of things:

  • Buying first, applying second. Most schemes want approval before you spend. An invoice dated before your application is the fastest route to a rejection.
  • A vendor who is not on the approved list. Check this before you fall in love with a quotation.
  • Incomplete company documents. SSM registration, bank statements and directors' IC copies are wanted in a specific form. Assemble them once and keep the folder.
  • A vague scope. "Digital transformation" is not a deliverable. "Point-of-sale system with inventory tracking for two outlets" is.

How to approach it without wasting a month

Work out what you want to build first, in one paragraph a stranger could understand. Then check which scheme fits it, rather than starting from the grant and inventing a project to match. Projects reverse-engineered from a funding form tend to produce software nobody uses.

If the thing you want is a quotation you can attach to an application, that is a normal request and we will write you one with the scope and cost broken out properly.

Where to verify

Start at the official sources rather than a blog, including this one. The MDEC and SME Corp Malaysia sites list current programmes and their live eligibility terms, and the BSN branch network handles the MSME Digital Grant directly.

Figures cited reflect publicly reported Budget 2026 allocations at the time of writing and should be confirmed against the administering agency before you rely on them.
